Find out about the Winery: Falua
Falua are based in the Tejo region; the winery is in the small town of Almeirim with vineyards on the banks of the river Tagus, from which the region derives it’s name. They also have the Quinta do Hospital estate in the Vinho Verde, where they produce premium white wines from the Moncão e Melgaco subregion. In their homeland, they are forging a reputation for wines with a sense of place, focusing on the terroir of their sites.
Falua focus on premium wines with terroir and the vines themselves dictating styles. The range is versatile and wide-ranging, from entry wines at the Vinho Regional level, all the way up to their stunning single vineyard wines from the ‘Vinha do Convento’. An incredible former riverbed cobble stone vineyard in the heart of the Tejo wine region, it is an emblematic terroir that tells a 400-thousand-year-old story. Located in the Charneca area, it is an improbable extension of pebble stones, topping a soft hill, quite far from the Tejo river. The truth is that, in geological terms, this elevation was part of the Tejo riverbed and that since then the pebbles have remained here, forming a several meters thick layer, combined with sand. Arinto, Fernão Pires, Castelão, Touriga Nacional, Aragonez, Trincadeira, Cabernet Sauvignon and Alicante Bouschet are grown in this 45-hectare vineyard.
