It is an iconic variety in the southeast of the Vinho Verde Region, which finds its home in the sub-region of Baião. Situated in the Douro Valley in the poor soils that mark the hillside vineyards. Avesso; a vigorous variety, appreciates the dry climate, cold winters and very hot summers. It can demonstrate attributes of great aromatic expression, acidity, freshness & concentration, revealing enormous potential for younger wines or for ageing.

The name itself is an enigma, suggesting an idea of aversion or hostility to something. The grape variety is not among the most productive and only thrives in the sub-region of Baião. With Quinta das Cazas Novas, Quinta de Guimarães and two other properties overlooking the Douro; the Cunha Coutinho family estate covers of over 100 hectares, of which 24 are dedicated exclusively to viticulture of the Avesso variety.
